Michael Vick Jerseys Flying Off Shelves

Michael Vick tore the hearts out of New York Giants fans everywhere yesterday when he led the Philadelphia Eagles back from a three touchdown deficit with just eight minutes left to secure a 38-31 win. It gives the Eagles a stranglehold on the NFC East. It was the latest round of heroics for Vick who is having an MVP type year in his second season since being released from prison after his conviction of operating an illegal dog fighting ring.

Last week we asked if Michael Vick was once again the face of the NFL as he was when he signed his record breaking 10-year, $130 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2004. He’s having his best season ever and is the leading vote-getter for the Pro Bowl. A Nissan dealership recently took a chance on Vick by inking him to an endorsement deal (Vick was making as much as $4 million at his peak in the early 2000s off-the-field through deals with AirTran, Nike, Coca-Cola, Kraft and Electronic Arts). The NFL reports his jersey has been the 20th best-selling jersey since April on its official site after not being in the top 100 in July.

Over the weekend I got more current sales info on jerseys that reflects Vick’s rise from pariah to hero this fall. Matt Powell, an analyst at SportsOneSource, tracks sales of sports apparel and equipment across the country. He looks at jersey data on a style basis instead of by player because there are so many different types of jerseys: mens, womens, kids, replica, home, away and more. Looks like Vick is as hot on retail shelves as he is on the football field. Vick jerseys represent three of the ten best selling jerseys (by dollar amount) over the past four weeks including one for kids. Troy Polamalu is the only other player with more than one jersey in the top 10. More than 18,000 of Vick’s best-selling home jersey have been snapped up the past four weeks at a cost of $1.4 million. The complete top 10 is below.
