Oprah Winfrey To Be Profitable in 2011

Oprah Winfrey’s new cable network OWN is expected to be profitable in 2011, its first year on the air, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Discovery Communications, Winfrey’s partner for the joint venture network, had previously said it did not expect OWN to turn a profit until 2012 or 2013.

At an investors’ conference Tuesday, Discovery’s CFO Brad Singer said that OWN should be “Ebitda positive” in 2011 due to “ad acceptance and good performance.”

“Ebitda” means earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and is a widely accepted measure of profitability.

OWN debuted January 1. About 770,000 people tuned in for the first hour of OWN programming and almost 1.2 million watched two prime-time episodes of “Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes,” a reality show about the last season of Winfrey’s talk show, according to new Nielsen data.
